Dundee

April 18, 1998 - October 28, 1999

Dundee was Tiger and Indy's son. While Buttercup is her Daddy's (Mark's) dog, Dee was mine. He had what I consider to be the ideal shiba temperment. He was always full of fun, always good natured, never quarellsome. He was a lot like his dad Indy, but wih more brains and more self-assurance. I was very complemented by an assistant trainer at Gail Fischer's All Dog's Gym when she asked me where I'd gotten Dee, saying he was the sweetest shiba she'd ever met - but then a lot of people thought Dee was exceptional. Dee had one really annoying trait: he loved to dig under the fence to escape the yard and run around the neighborhood. We tried everything: we put chicken wire along the base of the chainlink fence (and he learned to tear through it), we experimented with electric fencing 6" above the ground (but it shorted out to much), we lined the entire fence with large rocks (which slowed him down but didn't stop him), we tried only letting him outside while on a line (but this made him miserable), and finally we just never left him in the yard for longer than 20 minutes at a time. He died when he was 1 1/2 years old by trying to squeeze through a hole he'd dug between two rocks and getting his collar caught and twisted on the base of the chainlink fence. We are thankful that at least it was a fast ending. We were priviledged to have known him. Dee almost never got started in the first place (when he was born it took us several minutes to get him breathing) and we were exceeding lucky to have had him in our lives at all.
